Restricted Alternative Cancer Treatment Our goal is to change the State law so physicians and naturopathic doctors can offer integrated treatment of cancer. Our bill would also give the right to parents to select the type of cancer treatment for their child. Under current law if a parent does not approve of chemotherapy and or surgery for their child the child protection agency will remove the child from the home and have the treatment done on the child. The parents can also be arrested and their other children can be removed from the home. Freedom for physicians in California to have the same rights as physicians have in other states to offer safe/effective alternative treatment for cancer is illegal under Section 109335 of the Health and Safety Code. This year our organization is trying a different approach. We are focusing on the Medical Board to reinstate their Committee on Alternative Treatments and to present to that Committee the facts about the safety and effectiveness of alternative treatments for cancer. The goal is to prevail on the Medical Board to sponsor a bill to change the state law. If the public supports our effort by letter writing we think we have a chance of having the Medical Board sponsor the bill. If the Board does so then it has a excellent chance of passage through the legislature. The Board has almost all relative new members; five of the members are public members (non-physicians) and seven are physicians. The chair, vice chair and secretary are all public members. How you can help: Our proposed bill will be introduced in 2011-2012 legislative cycle. The bill can take up to two years to pass through the various Senate & Assembly Committees and then pass the full Senate and Assembly. It then goes to the Governor for signature. It is important that members of the various committees receive e-mails, regular mail and/or phone calls from individuals living within his/her district when the committee members will be voting on the bill. We will be alerting individuals on our e-mail contact list as to the progress of the bill and when to communicate with their legislators. This gives you an opportunity to be an active health freedom fighter. Please send the following information to freedom@citizenshealth.org: Your name, the city you live in and the senate & assembly legislative district (Number) you live in. This should be in your phone directory/newspaper or you can find it by clicking on http://www.sen.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/senators.htp then on left side click on “Your Senator”. This will bring up a window where you can enter you address and get your Senator and Assembly district you live in. We will send you info when your legislator is going to vote on our bill. (Please note 2010 is an election year and with term limits about one third of legislators will be termed out.) The first phase of our legislative activity will be to obtain a legislator who will author (sponsor) the bill. We may be requesting supporters in certain cites to e-mail their legislator to sponsor our bill. We will be making contact with the legislators staff in Sacramento in an effort to gain a sponsor.
